Character History (Pre-Veil): History of Rory
Post Veil History:
After he and Amy take the swan dive from the Winter Quay, instead of being taken by the angels, he was taken by the Veil instead and left on the streets of a very cold Manhattan in January 2015, his wife’s wedding rings in his hand. Figuring their attempt to outwit the weeping angels went awry he … settled in to wait for Amy to turn up, because that’s what Rory does. As time passes, he knows he has to build more and more of a life, so he gets a job as a nurse at one of the local Shadowkind clinics. He’s going to keep working there until the knights come find him. This location is flexible depending on where you want to set the mission as we previously discussed, but Manhattan is the easiest considering his canon point.
Chosen Canon Point: 705: Angels Take Manhattan
Personality and Psychology:In the trio of the Doctor, Amy and Rory, Rory happens to fall under the category of the voice of reason. He also happens to be the romantic hero. It’s an interesting contradiction, especially in comparison to a character like the Doctor, but at the same time, he manages to fill the role effortlessly without even meaning to. Rory on the surface is smart, resourceful and loyal, with a dry sense of humor and a friendly personality. He’s a nurse, which comes with an innate ability to not only care for people, but to still treat them like people. He’s the kind of guy who picks up medical supplies from each place they go, because you never know when they might be useful. Some people might consider that boring, but you’re not going to complain about it when that guy can patch you up quickly when killer robots are about to shoot the crap out of you with your laser guns.
The one aspect where Rory will probably never be practical is Amy. Amy is his wife, his soulmate, and probably the only woman Rory’s ever loved. They’ve known each other since they were children, and there is nothing that Rory won’t do for her. Once upon a time, he waited over 2000 years for her to be released from the Pandorica. He stayed with her so that she wouldn’t be alone, which says a lot about how much he feels for her. The Doctor warned him that he could go insane, but he stayed with her anyway, through wars, the falls of civilizations and the rise of others. Amy is the most important person in his life, and there’s nothing he won’t do for her. While he has his moments where he’s temporarily intimidated by the Doctor, at the end of the day he knows that Amy will always choose him, for better or for worse.
The juxtaposition between Rory and the Doctor is definitely one of the more interesting companion relationships we’ve seen on the show. Male companions aren’t all that common on Doctor Who. There have been a grand total of three in the recent “New Who” seasons compared to five female companions and two of the three appeared in the first series. Jack, while loveable, was more of a floater than a companion and Mickey was meant to be Rose’s disgruntled boyfriend. In Rory, he’s not meant to be a romantic rival, because the Doctor isn’t the romantic interest. Amy may kiss him a few times, but in the end, her heart always belongs to Rory, and Rory knows it. He may get frustrated with her, may complain about some of the flirting she does, but there’s a part of him that still knows that it will always be Amy, even when they’re in their rough patches.
Rory is also a father without ever having actually raised her. Melody Pond—who later came to be known as River Song—was taken from him and Amy when she was a baby, and she was raised away from him, turned into a killer meant to assassinate the Doctor, but she’s still his daughter. He still treats her like his daughter, and that can lead to some interesting conversations, especially with the Doctor, who later became her husband.
At the end of the day, Rory is the everyman who happens to go on fantastical adventures with a madman in a box, is married to the girl who remembered the Doctor back into existence and the father of the woman who killed the Doctor. He’s connected to all of these extraordinary people but still manages to remain refreshingly ordinary, which is part of what makes him endearing as a character. He’s grounded, focused and practical which are all things you need when you spend your day to day life with the wild eccentricities of the Doctor.
Memories Retained or Lost:Rory is going to remember everything related to Amy – aka their entire relationship and all of his adventures with the Doctor. He is forgetting everything else.
He is also forgetting River Song, his daughter, and everything related to her birth and life, including what Madam Korvakian did to his wife because that entire plotline was gross and we don’t need it.
Powers and Abilities:Pure Intimidation. Rory Williams is a beast and he dares you to tell him otherwise. They don’t call him the Last Centurion for nothing. Other than that he’s mostly human.
Roleplay Samples
Link to a sample of your character in action: Slime monsters for all.
Link to a sample of your prose writing style: This is not the reunion he’ll be getting in KOL.
Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession): His wife’s wedding rings. Also by the time the knights find him he will have a sword that he knows how to use but there’s nothing special about it, really.
Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights?Aside from the fact that Amy and the Doctor are there, Rory is just at heart a good person. He likes to help people and he likes to go on adventures, and this seems to be an ideal combination of both. Plus, it’s somewhere that will actually value his nursing skills, and will give him room to learn and grow in that respect.
Really, all he needs is Amy to be sold, but Rory is pretty much a precious cinnamon roll with a Roman centurion center so he’s basically built to be the perfect knight.
Do you have a preference for which member of the Knights your character is squired to? Nope. Stick him wherever.
